Corus is Europe's second largest steel producer with annual revenues of around £12 billion and a crude steel production of over 20 million tonnes. With innovation and continuous improvement at the heart of its business performance, Corus aims to create value by offering a differentiated product range supported by unrivalled customer service. With this in mind CORUS asked INCAA Computers to develop an inspection system for inline non destructive testing of their steel products.
The inspection system is part of the “Beitsbaan 21” of CORUS in IJmuiden. The system, specially designed for this application, inspects the produced steel products for pollutions and imperfections. It does this inline and real-time. Two Sperry wheels are used for generating ultrasonic sound pulses. These pulses are fed into the steel product. The echo’s are received, measured, analyzed and stored into data files for further processing in CORUS logistic system.
The data can also be visually monitored during the process. The system is capable of inspecting the product with a resolution of 1 sqcm, while it proceeds at 40 kmh.
